Last one on the plane!

Dan was the last one on the plane. He posted this picture on his facebook, I thought you might enjoy it.  One of his responsibilities is to carry the American Flag for his unit.  This is a great honor.

He said to me "this is your flag mom...everyone waves the flag on your birthday (July 4th)! I love you and you won't hear from me again until after Thanksgiving. I'll be safe. I love you mom." I got through the call without crying and could hardly bring myself to say good-bye.  He life a message on my cell phone and I have it saved to listen to.

If you're proud to be an American and love old glory, on of the symbols of our freedom, let's all thank a soldier on Veteran's Day this Wed., Nov 11th.

  3. Hello there, My name is Annie Smith, Shannon is my closest and great friend of mine. This morning, I found out about Danny Cook when Shannon text me, telling me about Danny just deployed yesterday along with my youngest sister, Sgt. Flores, Marri. We both had a feeling they may be in the same unit since they were at the same station, Ft. Riley and deployed at the same time as well.

Since this is Danny's first deployment, I am pretty sure he is in great hands with his unit since this deployment is my sister's 3rd time. I know it was the tough feeling to deal with their deployment but have to keep in faith and stay strong for them and the unit til they come home safe.

Speaking of deployment, I am not dealing with one soldier's deployment, I'm dealing with TWO soldiers, my sister's husband, Sgt Flores, Randy, was deployed last Friday as well. They won't be together in Iraq which that is the tough thing for my family and Flores have to deal with. One thing I learned from them, they both are risking their lives along with their Army brothers and sisters for our country no matter at what cost. I'm pretty sure that what Danny is feeling the same thing as them. That is what being an solider is all about.

This quote from my sister that she shared with me so many times, it's from Mark Twain, "That's what an army is - a mob; they don't fight with courage that's born in them, but with courage that's borrowed from their mass, and from their officers." That what kept her going and deal with daily lives in Iraq. This made me proud to be an Army sister as you are an Proud Army mom of PFC Cook, Danny. I know being in your shoes to deal with his deployment, praying and faith til he gets home safe.

Here's my advice, keep him in touch on update news on families, sport, what's happening in U.S., friends, and any kind of happy words that will make his day and keep him going til he gets home safe. Also, when he gets home, remember this, he will be not the same man before he deployed. He will be more matured, wise and alert, give him space and time for him to settle because Iraq will change him and open his eyes on how precious our lives by defending his country for our sake. That what I see in my sister when she first got back from Iraq. It had changed the way I look at my sister, a proud, brave and tough solider. She wasn't the same as I remembered her, it did made me sad and happy at same time, going through different roller coaster emotion feelings with her. That what made me look up to her, not as a solider nor a brave sister, and she isn't no longer a baby sister to me, she is my HERO in my eyes and my families too.

When Danny comes home, give him lots of love, stand by him, stand proud, and be strong, because I know he needs it as my sister and my brother in law needed it. Every solider needed it.

Thanks to Shannon for sharing me this blog, it made me feel a strong connection to her and makes our friendship grow more close and strong. Reading this blog, makes me feel I'm not alone in this and knowing I can do it along with you, Cook Family, Jason, Shannon, my sister, my brother in law and your son, Danny. May we pray and stay strong in faith til they are home safe in our arms once again.
