We Decked the Halls!

So many community volunteers where a part of the decorating out at Balboa, the Navy, a church youth group, Southwest College, Mercury Insurance and of course the Blue Star Moms.  Together the halls were decked out with ribbons, stars, pictures, thank you cards and the individual trees along with gift bags dawned each room. Lynn Rozelle and I enjoyed our time singing Christmas carols, fluffing trees, telling stories and laughing with our fellow comrades; mothers from all branches of the military!

Joyce I see why you love this day so much!  Would love to meet some of these young men. Praying for they're speedy recovery. I know the show of love and support today makes a big difference. God bless our men and women in uniform both here and abroad!

Army Jack made an appearance on the floor, I knew Danny would love a picture as Jack seldom appears in public. He had other servicemen with him...Navy Jack, Marine Jack and Air Force Jack. They have been mistaken for brothers as they all look so much a like! If it weren't for the hats it would be hard to tell them apart. Army Jack sends a big wooah! to Dan and the Big Red One over at Camp Liberty.

Be safe out there!

Soldier needs Trumpet!

Musical instruments are great fun, enjoyment and therapy!

Anyone, any where have a trumpet in a case lying around that could bless a Soldier in Iraq?  Danny's roommate is in need of one. Let me know and we can work out the details. Would be awesome to be able to let this Soldier know a trumpet will be on the way soon!  Shipping can be expensive, if you'd like to donate let me know.

Blessed to be a blessing!

Happy Thanksgiving!

This year is different and difficult in some ways...with Danny in Iraq and schedules as they are, the Cooks will not be together as a family this year.  I will miss it and hope each of you will have a wonderful time!  I will be with one of my BFF's Polly and then out to Joyce's to meet some Marines.  Being together is my favorite thing!  So Daniel-son I miss you deeply, David I see your pain and disappointment (enjoy the desert, take lots of pics and stay warm!), Jason and Eric you have more family to love and I am blessed to love them too.  Shannon and Steph, you are wonderful daughters (in law) and my grand kids are my 2 favorite little people my Cinderella princess Shelby and my Spiderman hero Jaden...I love you bunches!  My sister Bonnie, I look forward to a great time next week...for some very needed R & R for both of us; thanks Robert for always making it happen.  Tannisha I miss you and look forward to Christmas in AZ!  I do not know what next year will bring, this I know the Lord is gracious and His mercies endure forever!

Rev. Lin McGee, National Chaplain, Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc. expressed it so well:

"I am thankful for so many things, I can hardly express them all.   Each day so blessed, so full of life and living, so packed with excitement, joy, and even....  once in awhile....  peace.   May we take time from our busy days this Thanksgiving to pause and call to mind all that we hold dear and are most thankful for.

Many, as we sit  around the table with family, will be thinking of that special loved one serving so far away.  Many will be missing for the first time a loved one who will not be returning home.   So much given......

As military families, may we all unite to call upon the Lord to bless our heroes, bless our homes, and bless one another.  Military families are one family and unique in what they give to sustain the blessings God has given our country.

I believe the following little film will tell the story of how we all feel ~ of the pride that lives within our hearts ~ and of the grateful prayers we all pray: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=reDiz5nkxK8

Peace and Hope To Everyone."

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Side note:  how do you scare a turkey??? shout Thanksgiving!

This is my Patriotic Christmas Tree 2009 (photo by Shannon) in honor of Daniel joining the Army! This year he will celebrate with the Big Red One in Iraq.  BTW - Shannon's friend Annie's sister Sgt Marri Flores is in Danny's unit. Small world???  I'll be getting his Christmas Box together just after Thanksgiving if you'd like to add a card or small item to it let me know.

The family is on their own for Thanksgiving this year, I'll be with one of my BF's Polly Arndt meeting some new friends.  I pray yours is blessed. Our family Christmas is December 4th in Newport Beach at a beautiful resort.  We will miss Jason, Shannon, Shelby and Jaden.  Brandy, Bryan and possibly Kailey will join us.  Oh the fun! Hoping to Skype with Dan.  I have George W. Bush's new book "Talking Points" to read and I may learn to use my camera!  Time for some needed RNR!

I am thankful for the family and friends who are praying for Danny and our family while he is deployed.  Please thank a veteran for his/her service, they may be alone missing family at this time of the year.

Lord, thank you for family, friends and the joy of serving!

Care Packages Sent!

On Saturday I worked we the Blue Star Mom's packing December care packages.  More than 100 special APO flat rate USPS boxes were filled with everything from magazines, candy, drink mix, snacks, cards, hand warmers to person hygiene items.  We found out that Shannon's friend Annie has a sister in Danny's Unit, Sgt Flores. I was able to ship to her as well and the extra items were shipped to the Chaplains.  What a blessing! Thank you to all who contributed.  Start collecting now for our Spring shipment...more ideas on that to come.

Safe - Veteran's Day more special

I placed a small flag on desk for Veteran's Day.  I love how my new friend Joyce Orrell expressed it,

"Today we celebrate Veterans Day,
a day of appreciation and gratitude
for all who have served and are serving
in the United States Armed Forces.
Thank you for your courage and dedication.
Thank you for our freedom.
The sacrifices you have made on our behalf are beyond my comprehension,
a thank you seems so small but it comes from my heart,
thank you Veterans!"

Dan reported the travel was long and not much sleep.  He ate a brat along the way where they were made famous, and he was online with a few family and friends, and has reported he arrived safe in country. They’ll head out to camp in a few days so could be on his way as of this post.  The weather is strange freezing at night and up to 85 during the day.  I can see why hand warmers are needed.

Please continue to pray for Danny and all who are serving our country around the world keeping us safe, giving us freedom, we give thanks.

History of the Big Red One!

The Big Red One - The History of the 1st Infantry Division  - http://www.riley.army.mil/bigredone/history.aspx

The Division’s history begins in 1917 when General John “Blackjack” Pershing arrived in France with the First American Expeditionary Force.  The “Fighting First” led the way for American troops in World War I.  Names like Cantigny, Soissons, St. Mihiel and the Argonne Forest tell the story of the gallantry of the soldiers of the 1st Infantry Division, now wearing the famous “Big Red One” patch on their left shoulder.

During World War II, the 1st Infantry Division was the first to reach England, the first to fight the enemy in North Africa and Sicily, the first on the beaches of Normandy in D-Day and the first to capture a major German City – Aachen.

The D-Day landings on June 6, 1944 provided the supreme test.  In five days, the division drove inland and cleared a beachhead for supplies and troops.  Driving eastward across France against fanatical resistance, the soldiers of the 1st Infantry Division spent nearly six months in continuous action with the enemy.

After capturing Aachen, the 1st Infantry Division still faced months of bitter fighting at places like the Hürtgen Forest and the Battle of the Bulge.  When the War ended, the Big Red One had rolled through Germany and into Czechoslovakia.

The 1st Infantry Division remained in Germany until 1955, first as occupation troops, then as partners with the new Germany in NATO, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.  In 1955, the Big Red One redeployed to Fort Riley Kansas.

In the summer of 1965, the Big Red One was the first division called to fight in Vietnam.  For nearly five years, its soldiers battled the enemy while carrying out programs to aid the people of South Vietnam.  In April 1970, the colors of the 1st Infantry Division returned to Fort Riley.  Home again, the Big Red One became a dual based division with its 3rd Brigade in West Germany.

Another first was credited to the Division when it embarked on the beginning of a long series of REFORGER (Return of Forces to Germany) exercises.  These exercises demonstrated our nation’s determination and capability to defend, with our NATO allies, Western Europe.

On November 8, 1990, the 1st Infantry Division was alerted and over the next two months, deployed more than 12,000 soldiers and 7,000 pieces of equipment to Saudi Arabia in support of Operations Desert Shield/Storm.  Another first, the Big Red One led the charge into Iraq.  After spearheading the armored attack into Iraq, by February 27, 1991 the division broke the enemy’s defense along the Kuwait border and cut off the path of retreat for the fleeing Iraq Army.

During the next 100 hours, the Division raced across southern Iraq into Kuwait, engaging and destroying all or part of 11 enemy divisions. The Division fought its way through 260 kilometers of enemy-held territory, and destroyed more than 500 enemy tanks and 480 armored personnel carriers.  In addition, the Division captured more than 11,400 enemy prisoners of war – twice as many as any other unit.

On April 10, 1996, the colors of the 1st Infantry Division moved to the German city of Würzburg. Shortly after their arrival, the Big Red One soldiers assumed peace enforcement responsibilities in Bosnia-Herzegovina in support of Operations Joint Endeavor/Guard. The Division deployed to the Balkans twice in 1999, first as part of Task Force Sabre in Macedonia, then in Kosovo with NATO’s Task Force Falcon on 10 June.  This contingent patrolled the streets and countryside of Kosovo until June 2000, when it turned the mission over to the 1st Armored Division.

In November 2002, the 2ndBattalion, 63rd Armored Regiment joined NATO’s Task Force Falcon in support of Operation Joint Guardian for a peacekeeping mission in Kosovo. The 2nd Battalion, 63rd Armored Regiment enforced peace agreements in the Multi-National Brigade East Sector. The 2-63 helped create a more secure environment and assisted in transition to civilian control.

In January 2003, the division primed itself for Operation Iraqi Freedom. Big Red One soldiers formed Headquarters, Armed Forces-Turkey and prepared the way for the 4th Infantry Division to enter Iraq through Turkey. When the Turkish Government denied access through their border, ARFOR-T collapsed the lines of communication it had built and the 4th ID deployed to Iraq via Kuwait.

The division took a more direct role in Operation Iraqi Freedom in March 2003, when the 1st Battalion, 63rd Armored Regiment deployed to Northern Iraq. Operating in the Sunni Triangle, Task Force 1-63 conducted combat operations while simultaneously helping bring stability to the region.

As Task Force 1-63 returned home to Germany in February 2004, the rest of the 1st Infantry Division and Task Force Danger deployed to Northern Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. The 1st Infantry Division’s Task Force Danger consists of Germany-based 1st Infantry Division units along with the 30th Brigade Combat Team "Old Hickory" based in North Carolina, and the 25th Infantry Division's 2nd Brigade Combat Team from Hawaii.

The 1st Brigade Combat Team deployed to support Operation Iraqi Freedom in the fall of 2003 and returned to Fort Riley in September 2004.

As part of the BRAC changes, the Division cased its colors in Germany July 7, 2006.

The 1st Infantry Division conducted a transfer of authority with the 24th Infantry Division on Aug. 1, 2006, assuming command and control of Fort Riley.

The 2nd Brigade Combat Team deployed from Germany in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2006.

Due to changes in the war strategy, 1st Brigade assumed two new missions for the Army in 2006.

Mission 1: The 1st Brigade is charged with supporting the Army's Transition Team training mission where Brigade Soldiers train thousands of service members from across the Army, Air Force and Navy to become Iraqi and Afghan military advisors.

Mission 2: The 1st Brigade provided deployable security force elements that can move anywhere the Army wants them to be. Approximately 2,000 Soldiers from the brigade deployed fall 2006 as SECFOR companies.

The 4th Infantry Brigade, Combat Team, which stood up Jan. 16, 2005, deployed from Fort Riley to the Middle East in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in February 2007.

The Division's Combat Aviation Brigade, which uncased its colors Aug. 1, 2006, and Sustainment Brigade, (formerly known as DISCOM) are also on orders to deploy in 2007 in support of the Global War on Terrorism.

The 3rd Brigade, 1st Infantry Division uncased its colors at Fort Hood, Texas, in April 2007.

Last one on the plane!

Dan was the last one on the plane. He posted this picture on his facebook, I thought you might enjoy it.  One of his responsibilities is to carry the American Flag for his unit.  This is a great honor.

He said to me "this is your flag mom...everyone waves the flag on your birthday (July 4th)! I love you and you won't hear from me again until after Thanksgiving. I'll be safe. I love you mom." I got through the call without crying and could hardly bring myself to say good-bye.  He life a message on my cell phone and I have it saved to listen to.

If you're proud to be an American and love old glory, on of the symbols of our freedom, let's all thank a soldier on Veteran's Day this Wed., Nov 11th.

Departure

"I'm on my way officially. And I'm carrying the national colors (American flag) lost it's real honor and tradition since older times but I still feel honored and privileged to carry my nations flag in my hands all the way." from Dan (8:20am PDT)
We stand with you, and the Lord goes before you and His glory will be your rear guard!
Proud to be an American!

God Speed!

Dan has had lots of well wishes from family and friends, calls, facebook posts and my favorite is a picture of Shelby and Jaden making "Thank You" stars for Uncle Danny which they will mail as soon as we get an address.  Thanks Shannon for sharing that!  Danny mentioned it might be several weeks before he has an address, just ask if you'd like to have it.

I have to admit my heart is longing to hug my son and kiss him good bye!  My faith has me grounded as I know the Lord is sovereign and Danny is well prepared for what lies ahead.  I will be praying for safety and protect knowing that the Lord is a strong tower, a refuge in the time of trouble. Psalm 9:9-10.  Dan would appreciate your prayers too.

If you would like a bookmark or prayer card let me know.

Soldier's Creed

Soldier's Creed

I am an American Soldier.
I am a Warrior and a member of a team.
I serve the people of the United States, and live the Army Values.
I will always place the mission first.
I will never accept defeat.
I will never quit.
I will never leave a fallen comrade.
I am disciplined, physically and mentally tough, trained and proficient
in my warrior tasks and drills.
I always maintain my arms, my equipment and myself.
I am an expert and I am a professional.
I stand ready to deploy, engage, and destroy, the enemies of the
United States of America in close combat.
I am a guardian of Freedom and the American way of life.
I   am   an   American   Soldier  !  !

Author:  Unknown
These words are powerful!  During the graduation ceremony, one soldier recited this creed which is spoken in a distinct cadence and rhythm.  At the end all the platoons (over 200 soldiers) recited it together, it was dynamic!

They believe it, they live it...Thank a soldier!
